The funny thing about six pack abs is this-everybody wants them-but I think just about everybody finds ab training boring. Is it any wonder that late night cable is loaded with infomercials for one ab gadget after another?
However, there is an approach to training your abs-but it can be used for any body part-that requires nothing but you and a clock.
BEAT THE CLOCK TRAINING
Beat the clock training very simply is this, you take an exercise say roman chair sit-ups and rep out on them. Do not go to complete failure-stop when you feel a few more reps are possible. Take a short rest and then go again. The catch here is that you are trying to see how many reps of a particular exercise you can do in a certain amount of time. I like twenty minutes, but when you are just starting out go for just a couple of minutes.
WHY IT WORKS
This method works on a number of levels. First, when you first start out with this method of ab training and you can only do say twenty-five reps in say ten minutes. But after a few weeks of training you are able to bust out say one hundred reps in those same ten minutes. This means you did more work in less time, which means you made progress.
Secondly, this kind of workout provides more motivation because if you know you got one hundred reps last workout you are going to want to beat it this workout. So it becomes more of a game than a workout-which makes this more fun than just a normal workout.
Thirdly, this kind of training-because of the fact that you are in constant motion gives you some added cardio benefits to go along with your ab training-not bad.
SOME TIPS
If you have never done this kind of training before, please start slow one or two minutes will be more than enough at the beginning. Also, do not fall into the trap of doing sloppy reps just to beat your total from your last workout. This only leads to injury. Do all of your reps in good form.
CONCLUSION
Yes, ab training can be a real chore. If it is for you, give beat the clock training a chance. It could be just what you and your abs needed to get back into the ab training groove.
