Do's And Don'ts For Great Abs

ByStan W Thompson

Believe it or not, the key to great abs is not doing thousands of crunches, or for that matter, any huge number of any ab exercise. The biggest key to exposing your abs is to lose the fat around them. We will look at some do's and don't's for exposing your abs fast.

DON'T target your abs to lose fat--no matter how many crunches, situps, bicycle kicks, etc you do, if you don't get rid of the fat, you are not going to see your abs. You lose fat by burning calories and watching what you eat.

DO work every muscle--muscle is your body's primary fat burner. By making your muscles contract you burn more calories. Also, weight lifting tears your muscles and since your body has to expand energy to repair those muscles, it is burning more calories. A single total body workout can boost your metabolism for up to 2 days. IMPORTANT-make sure you work your legs. Your lower half houses more muscle, thus you will burn even more calories.

DON'T--start your workout with ab exercises. Start with exercises that work your core. True core exercises work the muscles that prevent your muscles from rounding. They also allow you to transfer force from your lower body to your upper body. By training your core when your muscles are fresh, you achieve the fastest gains in strength.

DO-keep your body moving. By reducing or even cutting out the rest period between sets, you keep your heart rate going and the calories burning. You can burn more calories per minute with weight training than running at 5 mph on a treadmill. And you get the benefit of improving your body composition.

DON'T- feed your body junk. Your diet is every bit as important in developing and exposing your abs as the exercises that you do. You have to eat smart or you are wasting your time working out. Research what foods are the right ones for your abs. Remember, the goal is to crank up your metabolism and burn the layer of fat covering your abs.

DO- Remember that your abs are a muscle just like any other muscle in your body. You build them up and sculpt them just like you would your chest, shoulders, biceps, etc. If you want to build up your chest, you wouldn't do 100 reps with a very light weight. You would use a weight that you could do for 8 to 12 reps. The same principle applies to your abs. Do some exercises that require you to use additional weight.

When building your other muscles you would do 3 to 5 sets and do 3 or 4 different exercises. Same for abs. Pick out different exercises that target different areas of your abs, and you will get the well defined midsection that you want.
