Muscle Size Workout Tips - 7 Steps For A Better Strength Training Routine

ByMarc R Ouellette

Expert Author Marc R Ouellette

If you'd like to improve your body composition by adding muscle and losing some fat, some form of strength training is necessary. The seven tips in this article will give you a good start to developing an exercise program.

First, come up with a plan. Make sure it's one that you will be able to follow. It should challenge you, but if it is excessively difficult, you may be setting yourself up for failure. A good routine may be a full-body workout on three non-consecutive days a week. If you don't have much experience, and don't want to work with a personal trainer, it may be good to find a workout plan online or in books, to ensure that your routine is balanced and targets all important muscles.

Experiment a bit. Your workout shouldn't be exactly the same every day. You can vary the exercises by finding several exercises that target the same muscles, and doing one with each workout. Alternately, you might choose to alternate a few weeks of high weight and low reps with a few weeks of lower weight and higher reps. It is important not to let your body adjust completely to any routine, or your progress will eventually stop.

Make the basic, multi-joint movements the focus of your workouts. Squats, bench press, and dead lifts are highly effective, efficient ways of targeting several muscles at once. Learn proper form for these exercises, and try to avoid machines, which don't work as many muscles at once. If you have the equipment and someone to teach you proper form, the Olympic lifts (the snatch and the clean and jerk) can be great additions to a weight lifting routine.

Change the order of your exercises between workouts. The major lifts, like back squats, should be at the beginning of your workout, but after those are done, change up the order of smaller exercises. This will force your body to keep adapting to each new challenge. Additionally, it means that no exercise will always be done last, when you are most tired, ensuring similar progress on each exercise.

Get adequate rest after each set of an exercise. You will probably need thirty seconds to a minute of recovery, or even longer once your workouts become very intense.

Make sure that you work your body evenly. Do the same exercises with your left arm as with your right. If you worry that your dominant hand is compensating for the other, weaker arm, use dumbbells instead of barbells some of the time. Don't neglect your back muscles while focusing on your chest, or your hamstrings while working on your quads. Strength imbalances can put you at risk for an injury.

Start each workout with a cardio warmup and some dynamic stretching. Then do a few light sets of each exercise before getting into your work sets. This will allow you to lift better, and it decreases the risks of injury.

Strength training is an ideal form of exercise for improving your health and appearance. By following the advice in this article, you will be able to get maximum results from your workout routine.

Exercise To Build Muscle - Secrets Revealed Here: The Top 6 Steps For Effective Strength Training

ByMarc R Ouellette

Expert Author Marc R Ouellette

Many people get excited about strength training when they learn about the major ways it can improve their athletic performance. By following the tips in this article, you will be able to train effectively and to maximize your improvements in strength and speed.

Focus on good form when you are learning how to lift weights. Don't allow yourself to attempt more weight than you can lift correctly. Poor form puts you at risk for an injury, and it limits your potential for improvement. Other than a few more advanced lifts, weight lifting exercises should generally be performed slowly. You will be working your muscles while raising weights and while lowering them. Stay in control of the weight throughout the entire movement for maximum benefit.

Proper warm ups are similarly important for avoiding injury. A few minutes on the treadmill and some dynamic stretching will wake up your muscles, allowing you to lift more weight without hurting yourself.

Warm up on each exercise by performing a few light sets, then working up to a heavier weight. This will ensure that your muscles are functioning properly, and it will activate muscle memory, ensuring better form. Focus on proper form while doing these warmup sets, and then make sure that your form stays the same once you add more weight.

You may want to perform some stretches between sets, in addition to whatever pre-workout warmup you have done. This is especially important when moving your focus from one body part to another. Just make sure that you are doing dynamic stretches, such as deep squats or lunges with body weight. Passive or static stretching should be saved for the end of a workout.

Stretching in the mornings and evenings can help you greatly. This is a good way to improve flexibility, which will allow you to perform exercises over a greater range of motion. Stretching regularly can also decrease the sore feeling you will get from your workouts.

Make sure not to neglect abdominal and lower back exercises. Most free weight exercises involve these muscles to some extent, as do many everyday activities. By strengthening your lower back and abs, you can prevent pain or injury, improve posture, and facilitate progress on many of your other exercises.

Basic knowledge of training strategies is highly important to making progress in strength training. By following the tips listed above, you will soon find that your strength, speed, and agility are improving. An effective strength training routine will have you well on the way to achieving your athletic goals.

Chest: Once or Twice a Week? One large decision that needs to be made is whether to workout chest once or twice per week. Chest is a large enough muscle to work it out twice a week, and it can be very beneficial if you've been trying to gain some size. Shoulders (traps), neck, and the upper back muscles have a tendency for tension, especially for those who carry stress in their neck. For many, this may become painful, irritating, and could make it hard to sleep.

Here’s an old school method to massage out those kinks, knots, and aches:

You’ll need:

A tennis ballA wall

Step 1. Lean your back against a wall.
Step 2. Place the tennis ball between your back and the wall, holding the tennis ball in place.
Step 3. Lean into the tennis ball, rolling it around to apply pressure to specific areas of soreness.

Back pains, shoulder stress relief with tennis ball

Tips:

The ball can be moved up to your neck, even all the way up to your head, or down as far as the middle-lower back.

This technique can also be applied to the glutes, feet, or any muscle capable of pushing against a tennis ball.

Try working the ball on the inside of your back, around your shoulder blades.
